Tia
That single word reminding me this Mythos I inhabit has the right idea. Our affirming craving is right to pity the Midwesterner who measures their success on thrifty discounts. We, on the other hand, know forward is defined exclusively by how round the world is. That quiet, knowing wisdom dying to scream “Lover! Keep counting your straight-and-narrow steps in bargains, you’ll end up right where you began.”

That’s to say– strays know there are no inherit bridges. Bridges are built by those who wonder. Nobody’s coming to save you. No one’s going to break you out, or cut the thorns from your feeling-brambles. No one’s going to storm the castle walls, kiss awake your birth, climb down your hair, white steed away your unaccounted-for accountabilities. No one will feed that malnourished yearning.

Face it.
You will have to do,
do it yourself.

We know this– us immigrants, I mean. In a culture where everything is foreign we learn the dialect of body. A new mother tongue. Our hands learning to say Hello in the language of empathy and white flags, all while America preaches the body an ignorant animal. But who can blame them… Intelligence dwells exclusively in the head, right?

If your heart shudders “no”, you’re at least partly bilingual.

The body is smart. It doesn’t discern between external stimuli and subconscious invitations. It reacts equally and viscerally to the tactile and the imaginary.

So here’s the question; How the fuck do you explain this to the American “objective.” The sad upper Western who made ‘objects’ of things and people by distancing itself from them. An act of deliberate desperation so anguished in its need to individualize, it succeeded to make a home bricked by inhumanity, roofed in pride, windowed by disparity, and cemented in otherness.

We scare you. You build borders around our melanin. Those borders are set up to define the places that are safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them. A dividing line or narrow strip along a steep, steep edge (what’s down there?) A borderland vague and undetermined created by the emotional residue of unnatural boundaries, yes, si, your boundaries. A constant state of transition. Inhabited by what you perceive perverse, grotesque, foreign, prohibited and forbidden.

Now, here I am. Alien in your land of Milk and Honey. Defining myself as an act of kneading, of uniting and joining. A creature not only of darkness and light, but a creature that questions the definitions of light and dark. Here to give meaning to the in between. Does this make me mad? Sure, but I choose this madness above your sanity. May my words be the splinter on your smooth palm, the eye to the needle of your thread. May I always pick the sour cherry from the bowl and glorify it naturally perfect. May my feelings be vast, my thoughts humble, my words precise, my tongue wild for wild tongues can’t be tamed, only cut out.

THIS is why I write. Because the world I create in writing compensates for what this world lacks. Because life does not appease my appetites, my loves, my grievances, my anger… I write to become intimate with myself, and you. To discover myself, to preserve myself, to make myself, to achieve self-autonomy. To dispel the myths that I am a mad woman or a suffering soul. To convince myself that I am worthy and that what I have to say isn’t disposable… Finally, I write because I’m scared of writing, but I’m more terrified of not writing.

and let my vow to softness
also be a nuptial to self-respect

at the end of the night
Ill do his dishes, and make his bed
leave only the “better than when you found it” things…

these things that remind me
I am more than just an indiscretion

and so fucking above luke warm bullshit

BOTANICA

Saffron | Crocus sativus

three Stigmas in a sea of Stamens
they pluck your gender at high value
and they don’t know what they’re missing

it’s your strength that humbles me
a muscle stronger outside its shell
how something so small and frail dares to
grow in the coldest of places
not brashly, you’re not picking fights with the seasons
you have nothing to prove
more tenderly,
embracing the snow that opens back to you

you’re not shy either,
un-apologetically cradling yourself igloo
a splash of purple during seasonal depression
like some capricious parrot finger-painted
the memory of sunshine on the ground
the tear feeding Skelleton Woman
the signaling of spring,
a child’s first breath,
the first crack of light through a tightly shut curtain

there are some who believe we hold grief in our lungs,
fitting then, for you to open equinox
each exhale releasing bitterness and tensions
breaking down walls with sympathy and kindness
the type of cry demanding two quick consecutive breaths
the one that fills the lung
and the second to hug the empty space where sadness is no longer

DATURA

You will be ambidextrous.

After taking one on the chin, your submissive hand will let her forehead be kissed by the dominant palm.

That type of Ying-Yang union, the unnameable subtleness in pressure change when Air plays Venae Cavae to Fire’s bloodlines. Phileas Fogg recognized the arterial trunk in these two secrete lovers; even went as far as ballooning his legacy on the skyways of their alliance.

Same way you fit in your body. Your bones, patient bones, hold your body content. Ever the reliable tranquility which (unless cremated) will lay still in their resting place long after your soul has left. This rock, soil, Earth, mineral, bone of you will syndicate with the Water of your skin. That Water that can never stay still. It plays butterfly to your muscles, always rushing somewhere else; restless, talkative and curious. It still wants to meet my own skin even when it begins to show scarred attempts to elope with gravity, or time. Sometimes gravity and time.

I need you like this. See, some frog diced my central nervous system like an onion some time ago. Rattlesnake tongues finished their tango on the floor of my eyes. To this day, my brain cries after failing to pilot its own ship. It’s still surprised when it finds itself docked at inappropriate ports. Call it the curse of the Water-Bearer to carry the blessing (or curse) of imagination, and to be exposed without preparation to a life outside its own containment.

So when I mistake a warning for friendly advice, when I picket fence non-conformity, when my left brain growls Cerberus at my right; sooth me tender, pst pst pst me back to the porch of your acceptance, leave the string-lights on at night for me. The ones with the “I see you,” and “you’re safe here,” light-bulbs. Lend me your eyes as mirrors, those eyes that recognize my prowl is more run away, than pounce. They know the bearing of teeth is really just a lost smile trying to find its way back home.

“All creatures must learn that there exist predators. Without this knowing, a woman will be unable to negotiate safely within her own forest without being devoured. To understand the predator is to become a mature animal who is not vulnerable out of naivete, inexperience, or foolishness.”
― Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype

CIVIL WARS

this one almost tucked herself under Muse blankets

im not sure what scares me more
to catch myself holding candles or
to feel like pupils will always get larger anyways

i guess it doesn’t matter,
The Star (XVII) – thinks not anyway
she likes to remind us that constellations exists even in Arizona summers.
like a sketch of sunspots from a start over sky
a zodiac trial easily lost, or won

life has a funny way of reminding you
it’s still living that way

and it wasn’t for lack of effort – i truly did cocoon
but Rams cut through those chrysalis
even the unconfessed ones
the “not now” and “maybes” and “if only’s” nympha
tried to put a pin in each excuse
because “not now” is easier than “im scared.”

HISTORY

9.22.20
I’ve been named many things this lifetime. Manuela, Manu, Manny, Blue, Bloo, Blue Bear, Blue Bird.

I’ve been named Pretty, Sexy, Smart, Friend, Lover, Mistress, Foe. On my less proud days, I am Mean, Cruel, Cold. I’ve been named Petty, and Generous.
To my grandmother I’m the the product of messy linage and a corrupted present. True predator playing lamb, hiding teeth behind teeth by drowning trauma and wrongs.

To my mother I’m a scavenger’s daughter. I could never stop building nests full of “yes”. How could we? Scavengers survive by starving a corpse in its place.

Make a fraud of yourself long enough and the fault lines do what they want with your mirrors.

The day Justice dissented, the city became a heavy gasp.

That same day monsters were introduced without the courtesy of foreshadowing. At least that’s what they tell me.
In truth, these monsters had been dancing on the pages of our country, making bookmarks of our ignorance. Saying “look over here, over here!”.

They cut off sentences the way knifes cut ovaries.

I woke up that morning to stomachfuls of wrecking balls, dagger bellies, worn debris. One storm after another, scattering against our shingles and gathering gray hair in our hope spaces.

I bulldozed my rib-cage onto the bridge, collecting what remains I could, keeping myself unkilled in the monsters’s cartilage. Taunting traffic bellow to come a little closer, yes a little closer. I can play this game too.

Fate and Death’s eyes were on strings, swinging from a ceiling I couldn’t see. Wide as white flags, watching me.

It was Death who made the first move in killing the cannibal beast between my eyes. She looked like loneliness, wet food, and skin diseases.

She died before ever being born.

Justice took her place.

Forcing an eye to the future where I should have lost a lot of years. Probably lost a lot of years. Definitely gained another lifetime.

After the massacre, Fate handed me a mirror. My name engraved in every strangers eye.

This is who I am:
A knot in that monster’s stomach. I twist at its insides and mouth
“Look. Look at me. Look right at me because I am looking right at you.”
The monster snarls, but I twist a little harder. “Snarl all you want, and call me what you will, because you no longer scare me, beast.
And I’m going to eat you, from the inside out.”

MIRROR

9.22.20
“in order to be with you, people must first bend.”
said the ax to the pine-cone.

you’ve wrongly mistaken
the joy of self recognition
for the fear of the unknown, you namby-pamby fool.

this pace is set more by intuition than reason,
a gait fueled more by vague hints of wonderment,
than steady assessments of purpose
and these people whom I choose to walk besides me are nothing short of courageous

to diminish them less than;
you have to diminish the worth of the moon.
to drive a wedge between human beings and the trees and the beasts and the waters, because trees and beasts and waters are as loyal to the moon as to the sun. To drive a wedge between thought and feeling, between the lamplight by which we count the day’s earning and the dark to which our dreams are connected.

“the universe is playing with us.”

don’t rest on your Laura-els just yet
all universe is magic,
and magic things are fond of deceptions
tonight im a weasel running errands for the moon.

this coincidence gravity,
this magnetic serendipity of chance is less “cross go”
and more; strap-in, you’re building callouses

you reflected back the loneliest parts of me
the “other world” parts, the ones with Gabriel Garcia, y Pandebono.
it’s been so long since I see the Andes smiling back at me
I just wanted to shake hands with our shadow puppets
no strings attached

i still think my name’s too long
i want short and direct
a kind of looking glass
because there’s something in me that answers and understand you
the type of name that takes pleasure
without asking people’s permission
playful
it didn’t inherit the accidental seriousness of time
still inquisitive
it wants to know the limits of endurance
a name that marries past and most recent past while playing hopscotch with the future
turns deadly enmity and hate onto love and confidence
a name that understands not all bites are wolf
some are fox
dragon
tiger,
ape,
bird of paradise,
winter mornings
a name without a mask of false feeling for it can finally live intensely not at the cost of the self.

Piazza New York Catcher | Belle & Sebastian
We channeled otters in the Mississippi? Someone photographed us that day, that pictures still hangs by a string.

Do Wrong Right | Devil Makes Three
We stole three Alpacas from a petting zoo and relinquished them to a moonshine commune.

Don’t Give Up | Noisettes
Every single time it felt like our feet couldn’t make it anymore.

No Cars Go | Arcade Fire
Remember that set up by the tracks? The one by the abandoned car. We thought we could cover the tent with enough branches to shield us from the snow. The next day you lied through your teeth when the officer came for answers. We laughed our bellies out that day.

Getting Down | The Kills
We snorted coke from sassafras in the back of a pick up truck. Your mother called me a hussy and your sister invited us to her wedding.

Quedate Luna | Devendra Banhart
The stary night bathtub on top of a hill.

Blue Ridge Moutains | Fleet Foxes
The first time we thought we were going to die. Withdraws, frozen water in the morning.

Bullets | Tunng
I think you knew I was lying to you. You kept asking questions I didn’t have the answers to. We slept on top of an old Mercedes parked outside a dive bar that night and woke up to an Earthquake.

Young Liars | TV On the Radio
We got ourselves a four course meal at a fine ass restaurant in New York when you told them you were in the witness protection program.

My Manic and I | Laura Marling
You proposed. Dummy.

Trains to Brazil | Guillemots — Fiery Crash | Andrew Bird
Mike lost his arm. We should probably talk about that sometime, you and I.

Bow for Blade | Brown Bird
You taught archery. We went back to GA and you showed me your dad’s bow and arrow. That’s the first time I saw you cry. You signed up for school that same week, then dropped out a week later. I got a job at the yogurt shop, stole $600 and we made our way to East Jesus.
