GARFIELD
welcome home little lion
your days here are counted – not sure who’s keeping track
some twisted under-creature pulling on the scales

we’re not so different
except youre better

i count sand and curse our lifespan while you headbutt jackfruit kisses in the face of cardiovascular failure

i want to be like you
learn from you

if it’s not too much to ask

SNAKE.S.KIN
you noticed the blank spaces, i see.
they’re saturated with the image you’ve painted of me
can’t say i know who that is anymore

i can say this:
papá painted me salt,
so i made life out of sugar.

no one is worth that unlearning.

FOOL.S.GOLD
you and I aren’t stubborn enough for the past
she makes your index finger look foolish
with how edged she’s got you

me? well, I play muse with the future…
over there, with the strawberry kneecaps and aloe shoulders.

I would like to borrow the beam of awe and shine it in your direction so that it always feels like you are the center stage of your life.

SATURN’S RETURN

5.24.21
The same day I pulled the velcro from my lips my phone hung up on itself.

That night we shuffled likes for a garden full of archetypes showing off their canines.
No one snarled. Not here, not anymore.
These madcaps turned enough cycles to know their plugins fit no outlet. They’ve seasoned in their brine, ripened the hardness from the growl.

Save that bite for tomorrow, fates know we’ll need it.

There’s a Cheshire cat cackling half facts from the hammock. She says the flocks inside our mind orbit the gravity of our pulse, that’s why their hours seem longer than ours.
She tells me if we wait long enough, one of them will be Mercury, one will be Venus, one will be Earth, one will be Mars.

Even then, I could tell her astronomy was clumsy and domestic, a way of keeping track of social graces and goldfish etiquette. A way to make sure an elastic band could hug the wrist.

We’re flexible, so I believed her when she said “There are breadwinners, and there are birdfeeders. Manu, we are birdfeeders.”

Typical Gemini.

We starve distractions to feed nourishment, and yes, we know this doesn’t always mean heartache skips meals. Even here we know this type of “fly” is the gift of taking things lightly.

I’ve spent months collecting memories. I know I’ll never get those words back. I slept on myself for a while.

There’s symbolism there.

Can you blame me? There are burn scars on my neck, from when train-wrecks crashed their own party.

I learned (eventually) that it’s less about building walls, but knowing when to close the window. Knowing there’s too much whiteness in their eye. It’s lifeless and stodgy. It atrophies my history into their version of “hard,” amputates my past, discredits my present.
But I won’t allow it to choke-hold my future.

I can let those words rest in their grave. I find life in my family’s shades of caramel and brown, pasts rich with empathy, hearts so light with the weight of rejected history they know how to find celebration.

The doctor said you need brain surgery.

I can’t help but wonder if the aneurysms in your brain get a little bigger each time I can’t remember a word in Spanish.

They’ve sunk, you see. Somewhere into the problems of my life here. Buying houses, nursing cats and gardens, lovers and lovers and lovers.

Meanwhile you break the seal in your dry joints every morning to walk over seventy years of life three kilometers for breakfast, prep the kid for school, clean the house, teach the kid at school, teach yourself fifty years of disconnection from academia, teach the kid again, help him with his homework, comfort your daughter after a day on the streets while you fear her breath carries your last.

For over a year, you’ve worn face shields on top of masks. Holding hoping your lungs will walk the park without breaking your bloodlines apart. Meanwhile. I loose sleep over mulch.

I am so, so sorry.

“I get the hard stuff, and someone else gets the fun stuff.”

If you only knew my body, you’d kick yourself for exalting demons you cannot slay.

Not that it matters. Red’s the whore’s color, and that sentence skinned me Rosemary West.

Still

I refuse to think of love as a form of self destruction, instead I choose to love parts of myself when they loose someone else. Right now, a portion of the world carries a broken heart, another is dreaming of being put together again. Me? I choose to beat for them all. To show that kindness and empathy don’t need an excuse to be exceedingly generous.

Deep down I know my past, in contrast to my present, is just as big a lie as it is the truth of parts no longer mine. There’s no such thing as a world too hard for softness.

Good or bad, ugly or pretty, to me, you’re gold.
In this way, maybe I’m Midas.

Or maybe you’re Icarus.

Some time ago I compared callouses to the biceps of passion, and I’d like to revisit that if I may.

My palms have been aerating clay for days now. They’ve created breathing passageways for soil, roots, and skin. Yes, skin. I’ve worked my hands to raw out the blood.

My palms are tainted salmon now, I can’t open the fridge without them spitting beet and cherry on the handle. To mitigate the damage (and pain), I’ve tucked them in lotion oiled latex gloves throughout my day to day.

When It’s finally time to plow the soil, I protect the latex gloves with garden gloves.

That keeps my hands happy, they love the plow, the shovel, the grit. Though the do miss my cat.

I’m sure there’s poetry in there somewhere.
